Do I need a Visa ?
Visa requirements depend on your nationality, passport, purpose of travel, and length of stay. Many visitors can enter Japan visa-free for short tourist visits, but requirements vary.
Please check the official Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs website or contact the relevant Japanese embassy or consulate before travelling..
Do I need travel insurance ?
Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance is essential and is the responsibility of each participant. Please make sure your policy covers surfing and any other planned activities.
Should I bring cash ?
Yes. Although credit cards are widely accepted, some smaller restaurants, cafés, markets, and local shops may accept cash only, especially in Shimoda area.
We recommend carrying some Japanese yen and exchanging it before hand, either at the airport or in Tokyo. ATMs are also available in many convenience stores which you may be able to get some Japanese Yen cash out with your credit card.
Will I need internet access ?
We recommend arranging an eSIM ( or SIM card ) or pocket Wi-Fi before or upon arrival in Japan. Internet access is useful for navigation, translation, and staying connected.
Wi-Fi is available at the retreat accommodation.
SURF FAQs
Can I hire a surfboard ?
Yes. Longboards may be available to hire during the retreat. Please refer to the Surfboard Rental Guide for available models and pricing.
We recommend arranging your rental in advance.
Can I bring my own surfboard ?
Absolutely! You’re welcome to bring your own board.
However, travelling on Japanese trains with a longboard can be difficult because of its size and station transfers. If you’re bringing a longboard, we strongly recommend renting a car or arranging suitable transport in advance.
Do I need to be an experienced surfer ?
This retreat is designed for advanced-beginner to intermediate surfers who can paddle out and catch their own waves independently.
We’ll choose surf spots according to the daily conditions and the group’s abilities.
If you’d like more individual support, private lessons with a local English-speaking surf instructor may be arranged at an additional cost.
What kind of waves can I expect ?
The Izu Peninsula offers a variety of beach breaks and point breaks. Conditions vary, so we’ll check the surf forecast daily and select the most suitable location.
As this is a nature-based experience, waves and weather cannot be guaranteed.
What will the weather and water temperature be like ?
Mid-May is generally a pleasant time to visit Izu, with comfortable spring temperatures. Evenings can be cool, so bring layers and a light jacket.
Water temperatures vary from year to year. A 3/2 mm full wetsuit is a useful starting point, but we will update the local forecast closer to departure.
We’ll send seasonal packing recommendations before the retreat.
What if the waves aren't good ?
One of the advantages of the Izu Peninsula is its variety of beaches and coastal landscapes.
If conditions aren’t suitable for surfing, we’ll make the most of the day by exploring hidden beaches, taking coastal walks, visiting local cafés, or enjoying an onsen or waterfall excursion.
Our goal is to create a memorable experience both in and out of the water.
Can I bring a friend ?
Of course! Many participants travel solo, and we warmly welcome friends travelling together.
If you wish to book together, please reserve two places and let us know your accommodation preference if you want private rooms.
Spend four days surfing, learning, exploring, and connecting with a small group of like-minded women in one of Japan’s most beautiful coastal regions.
Join Laure and Hiromi for a memorable longboard experience in Izu.
Choose your dates, reserve your place, and get ready for an unforgettable Japanese surf adventure.
